A planetary gearbox, also known as an epicyclic gearbox, is a type of gearbox used in various industrial applications to increase or decrease the speed and torque of the power source. It consists of three main components: a sun gear, planet gears, and a ring gear. These components work together to provide different gear ratios and transmit power from one shaft to another. The sun gear is located at the center of the gearbox and is driven by the power source. The planet gears, which are typically three or more, are arranged around the sun gear and mesh with both the sun gear and the ring gear. The ring gear is the outermost gear and is fixed to the gearbox housing. As the sun gear rotates, it drives the planet gears around the sun gear, causing them to rotate on their own axes while also rotating around the sun gear.
